Set a deposit on the work, taken by card when the job is booked, with the balance due on completion. A full bathroom can carry a bigger deposit than a tap change, so the more of your week a job holds, the more is secured.

The deposit comes off the total, so the customer only owes the balance. Settle it by card from an invoice, by bank transfer, or in cash, whatever suits the job, and a reminder goes out before the visit so nobody is caught out.

- Can I ask for a deposit on bigger jobs only?
- Yes. You decide which jobs carry a deposit and how much, so a quick call-out can take nothing and a full day carries more, each taken by card when the job is booked.
- What happens to the deposit if the customer cancels?
- The deposit is taken at booking and recorded against the job, so a day held is paid toward rather than held on trust. Your own terms decide what happens to it on a cancellation.
